Contemporary Monologues

Rules

  • 3 minutes max

  • Anything published after 1880.

  • Selections must be from published plays. Possible publishers include Playscripts, Dramatists Play Service, Theatrefolk, Dramatic Publishing Inc. When in doubt, please email us.

  • To determine if your monologue should be put into the Classical or Contemporary category, you need to look at when the original source was written.

  • If there has been a film version of the play, please make sure you register this selection in the CONTEMPORARY MONOLOGUE category and not the FILM/TV MONOLOGUE category.

  • 6 entries for Contemporary Comedic AND 6 entries for Contemporary Dramatic Monologues. Please be ready to designate the selection as Modern (published between 1881 and 1999) or Contemporary (published between 2000 and present) during registration. We may choose to further divide the categories if there are increases in these categories during this years registration.

  • EXAMPLES:
If you are doing a modern translation of a Greek play, you should submit it into the Classical Monologue category.

If you are doing a play written 5 years ago that has language that is similar to Shakespeare (written in verse, iambic pentameter, etc), you should put it into the Contemporary Monologue categories.

If you are doing a modern play that is inspired by a classical source, you should put it in the Contemporary Monologue categories.
